Well maybe my opinion would be a bit biased, but ask our loyal customers. I.C.E really does care about customer service, and making sure that the job is done the right way and to the customer’s approval.

Here is an article that I came across written by Jeffrey Orlof. I think he hits the nail on the head when it comes to Tips on how to reduce your home’s cooling costs.

“1. Keep the Filter Clean
A dusty filter reduces air flow. Examine the unit’s air filters once a month and clean or replace filters when necessary. Keeping your filters clean can cut the energy used 5 to 15%. Keep heat-producing appliances, such as televisions or lamps, away from the thermostat. The heat they produce can fool your thermostat into continuing to cool. Extra: If you are looking to replace your thermostat, you may want to choose one that offers a warning LED each month to remind you to change the filter.

2. Maintain the Ducts and Vents
If you are using a central air conditioning unit, make sure the air ducts are properly insulated, especially those that pass through the attic or any other unconditioned areas. You may want to have a specialist check for holes or leaks in the ducts. Duct tape can offer a temporary repair, but you will want to have any holes or leaks properly fixed. Make sure furniture does not obstruct air conditioning vents. Close off unused rooms and close vents in those rooms.

3. Check for Household Leaks
Make sure air isn’t escaping through unnecessary openings such as fireplace dampers, doors and windows. Take a good look at the seals around doors and windows to see if weather stripping or caulk needs to be applied.

4. What You Do Around the House
Natural light is great, but the sun’s heat can raise the temperature in your home. Make sure blinds and drapes are closed to help reduce the sun’s thermal heat. If you are intent on letting the light in, install reflective film on the windows to block some of the heat. You also want to reserve heat and humidity producing tasks like cooking and doing the laundry to early morning or late evening.

5. Use Your Fans
Fans can also help cool your home. No one is saying that a fan can replace your air conditioner, but they can give supplemental cooling. Substituting fans for air conditioners on milder days can save 60% or more in energy costs. Appropriately setting the fan on your air conditioner can help you save as well. Set the fan speed on high except in very humid weather. This helps push cool air around the house.

6. Set the Thermostat to the Best Temperature
Turning your thermostat to 78 degrees Fahrenheit is the best setting for your air conditioner during warmer months. Reducing your home’s temperature 72 degrees Fahrenheit could increase your cooling costs 12 to 47 percent. Also remember, setting it really low at first will not help your home cool faster. It will use more energy and if your forget to adjust it, you will be running far less efficiently than you think.”

Keep the thermostat at 78 degrees or higher!

“In the summer, energy pros say that each degree setting below 78 degrees increases your energy consumption by about 8%. And every degree you raise the thermostat equals 1% to 2% of savings on your summer cooling bill. A programmable thermostat makes it effortless to keep the house at a higher temp during the hours when you’re not home.”

Keep your unit shaded!

“If you use a window unit, too much sun directly on your unit’s outdoor heat exchanger can lower its efficiency as much as 10%. Keep it shaded with vegetation, without blocking the air flow.”

Enjoy the dark!

“Closing the curtains during the day (particularly on east- and west-facing windows) will keep the indoor temp down. Also, try to limit all heat-generating chores (laundry, dishwasher-running, baking) to nighttime.”

Replace your Filter!

“All AC operation manuals recommend cleaning or replacing your air filter at least once a month. Most filters cost less than a cappuccino, and a clean one can lower your AC’s energy suck by 5% to 15%.”

Make sure you have enough Freon!

“According to the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA), a system that’s 10% low on coolant (or freon, or the “refrigerant charge”) costs about 20% more to operate than a system that’s fully loaded. (Leave the topping-off to the pros, since freon’s a hazardous substance.) Additionally, low freon can cause the compressor to overheat and die early. That can result in a big-ticket repair bill if the compressor or condensing unit needs to be replaced.”

Keep the coils clean!

“During an annual checkup, your AC pro can also look for buildup on the outdoor air conditioning and heating coils, and clean them. Ask them how to check and clean the indoor coil, too. Because the coil is moist during summertime, it attracts a lot of dust. The ACCA says that dirt buildup on the indoor coil is the most common cause of poor efficiency.”

Almost half of your household energy costs go toward just two things: HEATING AND COOLING. You have a lot of room to make a difference and even small changes can make dramatic improvements in heating and cooling household fuel efficiency.

If you have an old heating and cooling system you might want to consider getting a new unit. The new eco friendly hvac units can save you 20-40% annually. The new units use a new environmentally friendly freon called R-410A.

Proper maintenance helps your air conditioning system run more eco friendly and more efficiently. Replace disposable filters or hose down permanent filters once a month during the cooling season. Clean the outside condenser coil at the beginning and at the end of the air conditioning season. Spray the coils with diluted detergent, and then hose them down. It’s also a good idea to have your entire air conditioning system checked yearly by a qualified air conditioning contractor.

Turn your thermostat up a couple of degrees in the summer and down a few in the winter. Every degree saves approximately 3% in eco friendly energy costs. If your home is empty during the day, consider buying a programmable thermostat to avoid heating and cooling your home when no one is there. These thermostats reduce energy use and can save you $100.00 – $150.00 in energy costs each year.

Change your air filters. A clogged or dirty air filter reduces airflow to the heating or air conditioning unit, causing it to work harder and use more energy. Change your filters once a month, clean vents and close unused vents. Just these simple things will save you up to 5% in heating and cooling costs.

Use fans whenever possible. Average central air conditioning can cost up to 58 cents per hour to operate. In contrast, a fan (ceiling or portable) cost only 1 cent per hour to operate. That’s a savings of 57 cents per hour on those days when your central air conditioning is not needed.

Make sure windows and doors are sealed. Again, this will dramatically improve your household efficiency. Sealing air leaks and adding insulation can reduce your annual bill by 10%.

Open a window if the weather is nice, turn off the air or heat and open the windows.

A cooler air conditioning unit minimizes breakdowns. Install your air conditioner out of sunlight. Also, shade it beneath an awning or patio cover.

Go for an eco friendly, high efficiency unit, it pays for itself. If you’re in the market for a new central air conditioning unit, consider an eco friendly, high efficiency unit. It’s less expensive to operate.
